Life in a Cube

image

While most people dread the cold, gray cubicle — I happen to love mine.

It may be because I didn’t had a space of my own when I stayed at home with the girls. Or maybe it’s the fact that it’s a totally blank space that I get to gussy up.

But now that I’m back at work, I can’t wait to make this boring cubicle pretty.

I’ve been brainstorming and pinning pictures in Pinterest like a crazy woman.

I’m looking to have a functional space that’s beautiful too. I’m going for light, airy with touches of teal and silver. Flowers of the faux variety are a must. And pretty storage tops the list.

Last Minute Thanksgiving Table Idea

budvase2

It’s the 11th hour. Is your Thanksgiving table set?

I’m not setting a table for Thanksgiving this year but I do have a great last minute table idea to share with you.

Use a small bud vase to hold utensils. My bud vase is actually an old spice jar that I spray painted gold.

Add some greenery and you’ve got a beautiful and unique table setting.

Happy Thanksgiving!

At the Thanksgiving Table

I know that Thanksgiving tables are on the minds of a lot of people with officially one week until turkey day. We aren’t formal in our house so place settings don’t usually make an appearance on our tables. But that didn’t stop me from praying around and dressing up our table for the occasion. chalkboardpear2

I came up with these really fun chalkboard pears that can bear the name of your guests. I love pears. They make an appearance all over my house. So why not at our dinner table as well?

chalkboardpear1chalkboardpear4I think they would even be a cute and fun addition to a bar cart or a drink table.

And stay tuned for these and other pears because I’ve decided to open up at Etsy store! Pears and paintings and other handmade goods will be coming your way very soon!

Styling a Table for Fall

tablecover

The other day, I attempted to style this small table in the hallway. But it felt flat. So today, I pulled some things from around the house to give it a little more life.

I added a tall greenery filled white vase atop two gold boxes, an orange candle, a white pumpkin inside a silver vessel, and a wooden plaque.

I love the little “moment” it creates in an otherwise empty area of the hall.

Fall Around the House

Fall in Houston is so pleasant. I’ve been wanting to spend every day outside. As I’ve said before I don’t usually decorate for the fall holidays much but I thought that this year I’d add a little something.

I picked up a bag of $3 mini pumpkins and tossed them around the house just to remind myself that fall is actually among us. Not to mention — the girls get so excited every time I add something season related to the house.

Halloween on the Front Porch

I’m not a huge Halloween fan. I usually never decorate — but this year the girls convinced me to do a little something. wpid-img_20141020_180001.jpg wpid-img_20141021_094604.jpg

I threw up a wreath I used indoors for Christmas last year and added some spider web and a few spiders. Instant (and cheap) Halloween wreath. And once I remove the spiders and the web — it goes back in the Christmas bin.

wpid-img_20141021_094406.jpg

Believe it or not — I severely neglected our yard in the last year. These beauties bloomed on their own from a pot of what I thought were dead flowers. I didn’t even provide water. Nature is amazing.

wpid-img_20141021_094400.jpg

And I even carved a pumpkin for the first time. There’s some other decorations lurking around that I didn’t photograph but this is pretty much it.

So do you do the Halloween decorating thing?

Living Room Before & After

I was looking through a few old folders on my computer and I came across this picture of our living room about a year after we moved into our current townhouse. I was pretty amazed at how different it looked in just a year.

2014 – current

I love how the dresser that we use as a media console (read all about that makeover here) totally grounds the space. It feels much larger than it did before, even though there is a bigger piece of furniture in the room.

The media console is my favorite thing because it adds a ton more storage which we need desperately. It functions so much better than that tiny TV stand we hand before.

Another reason the room didn’t work was because the colors I had decided on were all wrong. I’m not afraid to admit that I was lost for quite awhile when it came to pulling this room together.

The room transformed with just a few deliberate choices and this is how I did it:

  • Chose a color scheme that complimented the eggplant colored chairs
  •  Added the accent color in a few different accessories around the room
  • Glammed the room up with some gold accents

This room is my favorite in the house. Even though the chairs are quite a statement piece, they really make the space feel like it belongs to me.

What’s your formula for putting a room together? Any secret tips you care to share?

Make It Beautiful: DIY Starburst Wall Hanging

starburst title

My all time favorite thing to do to make my house more beautiful is to create art. I made a starburst wall hanging out of stuff I just had lying around my kitchen.

starburstmaterials

I used glue sticks, an old spice jar lid and skewers.

I took some time and laid out my pattern on the table just to make sure that the skewers were even on all sides.

The glue sticks didn’t end up working on the lid since it’s metal so I switched to a stronger adhesive. I put a string of glue around the entire spice jar lid and let it sit for a few minutes to harden up. Then I stuck in the skewers and wiped away any excess adhesive.

I hung it in my girls room as a temporary resting place but I think I’ll maybe paint it gold and hang it in the bathroom. It was such a simple project and cost me absolutely nothing to make.

Fill it with Meaning

One of the things that makes home home is what it means. Those items that hold special significance and spark laughter, smiles and moments of reminiscing.

One of my favorite necklaces peeking out of my jewelry box

Like this jewelry box my husband gave me for our anniversary. It has the sweetest poem written by him on the bottom.

thriftedbowl3

Or these pretty little delicate bowls I found while thrifting. They sit on my bedside table and hold my ring and earrings.

And not only items — but pictures. Memories of a moment, friends or places. And pictures that the kids have drawn.

When you make a home you fill it with things that have meaning to you and your family. So when you walk through your door — this place is yours. No matter if it’s temporary or if you plan to live there forever.

Fill your home with meaning.

Defining Home

defininghome

When I think of home I think of a place where there’s love overflowing.

I think of curling up on the couch watching millions of episodes of Strawberry Shortcake and little faces in girly costumes putting on plays. I think of the holidays spent cooking in the kitchen — then gathered around the table eating. I think of countless hours spent huddled around the kitchen table doing homework and the bedtime stories we read before tucking the girls into bed. I think of that glass of wine shared with my husband once the house has gone quiet.

It took me awhile to figure out my definition of home. I wanted it to feel a certain way but I wasn’t sure where to start with decorating it so that it evoked that warmth I was after.

And for me the beginning of decorating my home came in defining what home is.

Is it cozy?

Is it a retreat?

Is it a space where you can shut out the world and just be?

Defining home is such a purpose filled act.

For me — home is where I want to be able to come in, take a deep breath, shed the layers and relax. I want a home where everything has its place. Where we can kick off our shoes and nothing is off limits. Every inch is utilized and functions for us in someway.

So how do you define home? Have you ever stopped to think how you can purposefully create the home you want by taking the time to define what you want your home to be?
